The name comes from the star, Achernar, which is the brightest star in the constellation Eridanus, and can usually be seen from our home in the Southern Hemisphere. I particularly like it because you can use it to find South, much like you can with the Southern Cross. For the record, it's usually pronounced "ache-ra-nar".
